UFO sleuth Richard Dolan visits Thunder Bay

Star gazers who are trying to gain a better grasp of the universe came out to hear an American UFO researcher speak at the Mind Vault in Thunder Bay on Sunday.
One of the 50 people in attendance was Thunder Bay Observatory operator Randy McAllister, who said his belief in UFOs and extraterrestrials evolved from his interest in astronomy.
"Our reasoning tells us that there's more going on up there than meets the eye and science is just finally catching up,” he said.

catching up with what's going on in the universe. (Nicole Ireland/CBC)

“And I could give you lots of examples, like the Kepler space telescope the last couple of years, [and] how many planets it's found. Science is starting to catch up to our understanding of the universe."
The man McAllister came to see — Richard Dolan — has been researching UFOs for 20 years.
Dolan said multiple military and intelligence sources have told him the US government has been actively studying UFOs for decades. He also pointed to several documents that have been declassified and predicted more secrets will be uncovered in the coming years.

UFO researcher Richard Dolan came to The Mind Vault in Thunder Bay, where about 50 people watched his presentation called "UFO's for Modern Thinkers." The presentation is part of a cross-Canada tour called the Modern Knowledge Tour. (Nicole Ireland/CBC)

"You know, the Wikileaks era is now upon us,” Dolan told the crowd.
“We're at the cusp of a massive transformation in certain fundamental structures of knowledge of our society."
Dolan noted that physics is starting to explain some UFO phenomena, including manipulating gravity.

NASA's real life Enterprise may take us to other star systems one day

Dr. Harold "Sonny" White is still working on a warp drive at NASA's Johnson Space Center. His work is still in the experimental stage but that doesn't mean he can't imagine what the real life Enterprise ship would look like according to his math. This is the starship that may take us where no human has gone before. And it has me screaming like a little Klingon girl.

Concept 3D artist Mark Rademaker told io9 that "he worked with White to create the updated model, which includes a sleek ship nestled at the center of two enormous rings, which create the warp bubble."

The updated model is the one you can see above, a variation of the original concept which, according to Dr. White, was rendered by Rademaker based on an idea by Matthew Jeffries, the guy who came with "the familiar Star Trek look." This is the original warp drive spaceship concept:

Dr. White—whose daily life is working in future propulsion solutions for interplanetary travel in the near future, like ion and plasma thrusters—developed new theoretical work that solved the problems of the Alcubierre Drive concept, a theory that allowed faster-than-light travel based on Einstein's field equations in general relativity, developed by theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre.
A spaceship equipped with a warp drive would allow faster-than-light travel by bending the space around it, making distances shorter. At the local level, however, the spaceship wouldn't be moving faster than light. Therefore, warp drive travel doesn't violate the first Einstein commandment: Thou shall not travel faster than light.

Dr. White's work at the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate is science. And while his department only gets peanuts compared to NASA's budget (not to talk about the Pentagon's) I find his words comforting:
Perhaps a Star Trek experience within our lifetime is not such a remote possibility.
See, Dr. White and his colleagues aren't making a movie or coming up with 3D renders for the sake of it. They just don't just believe a real life warp drive is theoretically possible; they've already started the work to create one:
Working at NASA Eagleworks—a skunkworks operation deep at NASA's Johnson Space Center—Dr. White's team is trying to find proof of those loopholes. They have "initiated an interferometer test bed that will try to generate and detect a microscopic instance of a little warp bubble" using an instrument called the White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer.
It may sound like a small thing now, but the implications of the research huge. In his own words:
Although this is just a tiny instance of the phenomena, it will be existence proof for the idea of perturbing space time-a "Chicago pile" moment, as it were. Recall that December of 1942 saw the first demonstration of a controlled nuclear reaction that generated a whopping half watt. This existence proof was followed by the activation of a ~ four megawatt reactor in November of 1943. Existence proof for the practical application of a scientific idea can be a tipping point for technology development.
According to Dr. White, this is a roadmap that they need to follow to achieve that final objective of rapid interstellar travel.

If his work is successful, he says that we would be able to create an engine that will get us to Alpha Centauri "in two weeks as measured by clocks here on Earth." The time will be the same in the spaceship and on Earth, he claims, and there will not be "tidal forces inside the bubble, no undue issues, and the proper acceleration is zero. When you turn the field on, everybody doesn't go slamming against the bulkhead, which would be a very short and sad trip."Every time I read that paragraph I smile—and these renders just make my smile so wide it looks stupid.OK, Dr. White, you got our attention. Make it so.

This triangular object was sighted in the morning in Reutlingen, Germany.
It was Sunday, in the city center were no people at the time. Thus, the UFO could almost fly unnoticed over Reutlingen.
Recent footage of a strange triangular object flying over Reutlingen, Germany. What do you think it is? Is it a man-made object, or perhaps something from out of this world?
(Editor's Note: I don't know why this video, which was taken in December, 2013 was just listed on Google alerts, but for what it's worth, check it out and see what you think; an outright hoax, a remote-controlled model, or the real thing?)

Jon Ronson: 'I looked for UFOs with Robbie in Snoop Dogg's plane'

Jon Ronson has described his experience of UFO hunting in Nevada… with Robbie Williams… in Snoop Dogg's plane.
The journalist and documentary maker ended up UFO-watching with the Swings Both Ways singer in the middle of the Nevada desert.

How did it all come about? Watch the video below:

Ronson discussed the events on Alan Davies' new show As Yet Untitled, which comes to Dave on Monday, June 16 at 10pm.
Williams has previously confessed that it was an obsession with UFOs that made him "weird and fat", after the demands of his music career took their toll.
"I got a bit burnt out and I was looking for something else. I thought that something else was making documentaries about UFOs," he explained.
"But that wasn't going to work out for me. It just made me weird and - at the time - fat. Weird and fat, looking at UFOs."

A true believer in extra-terrestrial life, Williams also revealed in 2008 that he had been visited by an alien life form.
He said that he was visited by a strange black light after putting the finishing touches to a song, titled 'Arizona', about alien abduction.

'Edge of Tomorrow': Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt fight aliens and time-warp weirdness (review)

By Clint O'Connor, The Plain DealerThe Plain Dealer

Let's dispense with the bad bits about "Edge of Tomorrow."
No. 1: Terrible title. Makes it sound like a soap opera. Bring on the evil twins, amnesia and lame make-out scenes.
No. 2: Terrible trailer. It suggested a heavy, psychological mind-bender. A boring one.
No. 3: Bad ads. Apparently, Warner Bros. has done some market research and is now repositioning the film, trying to sell it as a love story in its TV commercials.
All of this serves to cloud what "Edge of Tomorrow" truly is: a great action movie.
Director Doug Liman has created an unrelenting, rock-'em, sock- 'em thrill ride that delivers a lot of bang for your movie bucks.

Tom Cruise stars as Maj. William Cage, a PR officer ordered to the front lines by a general (Brendan Gleeson) leading the International Defense Force. You see, aliens have landed on Earth. They have killed millions and have taken over most of Europe.
The IDF is on the verge of attempting a massive D-Day-like landing in western France, albeit with soldiers inside of clunky, super-high-tech weapon suits specially designed to fight the attackers. The aliens are killing machines that look like hordes of giant swirling-twirling octopi.
Needless to say, Maj. Cage wants nothing to do with the impending slaughter, makes a run for it, is arrested, stripped of his rank and hurled into the staging area and a squad led by the ornery Sgt. Farell (Bill Paxton).
The kicker is that Cage is killed a few minutes into the landing. But that's just the beginning of the story. In the process, he picked up some alien blood that makes him relive the same day over and over. Cage wakes up, meets Farell, lands in France, gets killed, wakes up, meets Farell, lands in France, etc.
The "Groundhog Day" effect is in full force, but Cage learns a little more about battling the aliens with each land-die-awaken episode. Cage progresses from coward to combatant. And he has a kindred spirit, Special Forces superstar Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), a hero of the alien wars who understands Cage's dilemma and wants to exploit it to defeat the enemy.
Of course, the repeated-sequences premise is ripe for movie disaster. But Liman ("The Bourne Identity") and crew pull it off with expertly efficient editing and a twist: Though we see Cage go through the same day many times, he also learns from experiences beyond what we see, which adds several mysterious turns.
Based on the novel "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka, "Edge of Tomorrow" embraces its time-warping weirdness with captivating results. Cruise and Blunt make for an excellent action team, and if you can forgive the title, trailer and ad campaign, you're in for an engrossing, fast-paced payoff.

Claims of strange UFO sightings over West Wales last night

Published on June 05 By Carmarthen Journal

A PARANORMAL investigator is appealing for information after an unidentified cluster of lights was spotted over Carmarthenshire last night.
Gavin Davies, who runs The Paranormal Chronicles, said he was lying in bed when he spotted the fast-moving objects over Haverfordwest at 11.05pm.
He quickly  put an appeal on Facebook and got responses from people who spotted the objects, described as one larger, bright light, with two smaller lights around it – over Narberth, Whitland and St Clears – and was heading east.
Gavin said: “I was in bed and I saw this star but it started moving across the sky.
“You obviously think ‘what could it be?’
“My immediate suspicion was it was the International Space Station but I checked and it had already passed.
“There were smaller lights that traveled towards it and moved round it.
“I went on Facebook and asked if anyone had seen it.
“A couple from St Clears area said they had seen it travelling towards them, and later on someone from Narberth said they had seen it at 11.10pm.
“It is literally a UFO. I’m not saying it’s aliens but at this time we don’t know  what it is.”
Gavin, who normally deals in ghost sightings and runs website  http://theparanormalchronicles.com and has published a best-seller book, A Most Haunted House, said he hoped to find someone who photographed or filmed the craft.
“Smaller star like lights have been seen to approach the larger one and make circular flight patterns around it and then fly off at speed," he added.
“Reports suggest it was too bright and large to be a Chinese lantern and the object made 'drastic' course changes. No sound was heard coming from the object.”
