Beings of the Otherworldly Kind

By Nick Redfern

As you’ll know, every so often I’ll review here, at Mysterious Universe, a new book. And it’s that time again. Today, it’s Real Encounters, Different Dimensions, and Otherworldly Beings by Brad Steiger and his wife, Sherry Hansen Steiger. Neither Brad nor Sherry need introductions. But they are going to get them anyway!
Brad has now penned somewhere close to 200 books, on all manner of paranormal topics, including UFOs, life after death, and zombies. Sherry has authored/co-authored more than 40 books, including the best-selling Miracles series. And, I’m pleased to say, that even with so many titles under their belts, the dynamic duo continue to put out quality material.

Published by Visible Ink Press, Real Encounters… is a book that, as its title suggests, exposes the reader to an amazing number of strange entities that have for so long interacted with, helped, plagued, manipulated, taught, deceived, and downright baffled the Human Race. They are the creatures of other realms of existence; those beings that suddenly pop into our reality, do their weird thing, then pop out of it again – just as suddenly.
Some of them are from the depths of space, others come from the depths of the planet and the oceans. More than a few seem to have the uncanny ability to negotiate dimensions as easily as we go from room to room in our own homes. Then there are those intelligences that appear to come from the land of the dead; that mysterious place (or places) to which some essence of us travels once physical life is at an end.
It’s important to note – with so many different critters, creatures and “things” under the Steiger microscope – that Real Encounters is not some sterile, seen-it-all-before reference-type book. No. This is a first-class study of a large body of data and varied entities, and one which provides the reader with a wealth of thought-provoking data – and all of a notable nature.
Take, for example, the section of the book titled Contact with Space Brothers and Sisters. Yep, we’re talking about the controversial “Contactee” movement, one which really caught major attention in the 1950s, thanks to the likes of Orfeo Angelucci, George Adamski, George Van Tassel, Truman Bethurum, and George Hunt Williamson. For the most part, the UFO research community has been content to place such cases into several discernible categories: real, hoax, and fantasy. Brad and Sherry take us down a very different path, however.

They carefully and astutely note the undeniable similarities between the messages received from the Space Brothers and Sisters and those that are channeled by spirit mediums. This leads the pair to comment that perhaps “…they are all part of the same chameleon-like phenomenon that changes to reflect the belief structures of the time.” In other words, this is bloody good stuff! It challenges the accepted wisdom and theories for who or what the Space Buddies are, and pushes us down a far more satisfying and likely pathway.
One of the things that has long-fascinated me is the notion of highly advanced beings coming not from outer-space, but from inner-space. As in far below our feet. Yep, we are talking about creatures of the underworld. Such theories have been advanced, to varying degrees, by Richard Shaver, Mac Tonnies, and Wm. Michael Mott. In fact, the reason why the subject so fascinates me is because of a story that originated in my home county of Staffordshire, England – it’s a 1770-era saga revolving around an old, underground chamber and a menacing, hooded character.
Our fearless authors address the story, along with many others; all of which suggest that many of the near-magical beings that interact with us come from a place far closer to home than we might think, or they may wish us to believe. Tales of “Old Ones,” “Elder Gods,” the occult-driven beliefs of the Nazis, and ancient legends of highly advanced races inhabiting subterranean realms, abound in what is an undeniably great chapter.
Whenever people mention the word “fairy,” it inevitably conjures up pop-culture imagery of small, winged, sparkling figures; the kind most often represented in children’s books and on Christmas cards and such like. The reality behind the fantasy and the folklore is very different, however. Brad and Sherry share with us – in a chapter titled The Wee People: Guardians of the Earth Mother – that the phenomenon of the “little people” has a significant place in reality.

One gets a distinct feeling from reading this particular chapter that the veil between our reality and that of the “wee folk” is one that, on far more than a few occasions, becomes definitively blurry. That’s when magical encounters occur - some of which (maybe even all) clearly take place when the witness is plunged into a distinctly altered state of mind. Such creatures – it is made very obvious to us - are not to be trifled with. Yes, they can be friendly. On other occasions, however, they are trickster-like. Sometimes they appear to be nothing less than outright malevolent and hostile.
I was very pleased to see that one particular issue that gets good, solid coverage in Real Encounters… is the work of Trevor James Constable, the brains behind the theory that at least some UFOs are “…plasmic living organisms native to our atmosphere.” If you aren’t already aware of Constable’s work, the Steigers will open your eyes to a whole new world – almost literally!
The domain of the afterlife gets much coverage, too, in the book. We’re talking about sinister and violent poltergeists, electronic voice phenomena, the world of the medium, shadow people, and numerous other issues that suggest there are things out there – on the other side of the veil, so to speak – with whom we can interact. When we do interact with them, however, we should take great care. In many cases, deception and manipulation are their calling cards.
Dreams that may be far more than “normal” dreams, ones in which people have reportedly traveled to worlds and realities far beyond our own, abound in the pages of the latest Steiger-Steiger book. As do shape-shifters, extraterrestrial kidnappers, and benevolent and angelic entities.

And, there is something else too: my favorite chapter of the book. It goes by the title of Meeting Strange Creatures in Dark Forests. Large, shadowy and creepy woods curiously provoke wonder, intrigue and mystery in all of us – even if we’re not overly sure why. We imagine them to be filled with mysterious creatures; those diabolical half-human monsters, winged and nightmarish beasts, and paranormal animals that lurk in the shadows of the thick trees.
Well, that’s exactly what you get in this particular chapter: a fine study of how easy it is to leave civilization behind and suddenly become plunged into a very different world; a world of the primitive, of the malevolent, and of the abominable.
This is a book that skillfully demonstrates the world we see around us does not amount to all that there is to see. There are domains and dimensions – call them what you will – that are inhabited by supernatural intelligences that we do not fully understand, and which we may never fully understand. In a strange and symbiotic fashion, however, it’s as if they need to be seen by us, just as much as we crave the answers to what they are and what they want from us. There are doors to be opened and forces and forms to be reckoned with.
Real Encounters, Different Dimensions, and Otherworldly Beings opens those doors and unleashes those forces and forms upon us – and then some!
Finally, I should add that here in Dallas, Texas the weather is usually warm to scalding. Over the last couple of weeks, however, the temperature has plunged, the skies have darkened ominously, and the wind has been powerful and howling. It was against this chilly, atmospheric backdrop that I eagerly read Real Encounters… And, for full effect, I recommend that you do likewise.

Object burns up over Dillon Montana U.S. (Video)

Published on 23 Jan 2014 By TheLifebeyondearth

DILLON, Mont. -
A Dillon resident saw a huge fireball in the sky, just before 8 a.m Tuesday. Ruth Jackson of Dillon spoke to NBC Montana over the phone and says she had no idea what she was looking at, so she pulled over to take a photo.
"We were driving east on Helena St. in Dillon and the sun hadn't come up yet but there was this bright thing in the sky and I said to my husband, 'What is that?'" said Jackson.
She was a passenger in the car along with her husband and two granddaughters. They were on their way to drop the girls off at school when they stopped to take the picture.
"I am always looking for something to take a picture of, but this was just awesome," said Jackson.

We showed the photos to the MSU Space Grant Consortium and met with Director Angela Des Jardins. She tells us what they appear to be at first glance.
"When I saw it first, the first thing that came to mind is something was falling through the air that was on fire," said Des Jardins.
Des Jardins tells us with so little information it is hard to pinpoint what exactly this could be, but she did rule out a few possibilities.
"You can put to rest that there is any aliens or anything like that, and I am not the biggest expert on meteors but I think you can probably safely say it was not a meteor," said Des Jardins.
The Montana Space Grant Consortium gets photos from people across the state on a regular basis. However Des Jardins tells us these photos are unlike anything she has seen so far.
"I can see why this is capturing people's imagination and why they really wanted to take pictures of it because that is pretty rare," said Des Jardins.

Google Images Reveal Triangular Moon Mystery: Could It Be An ET Colony?

Pictured is a composite Google Moon image of (left) the region on the far side of the moon known as Mare Moscoviense; (center) an unusual triangular-shaped object located near the bottom-left portion of Mare Moscoviense; and (right) a close-up of the object, showing what appear to be seven lights in symmetrical formation on the object. | Google Earth

Are extraterrestrials using the moon to watch us from hidden bases?
One might jump to that conclusion after looking at an image (seen above) spotted by YouTube poster wowforreeel. Using Google Moon imagery, wowforreeel scanned the far side of our celestial neighbor and reported seeing and capturing the image of what appears to be a huge V-shaped or triangular object that has two rows of seven lights.
At first glance, it certainly appears a bit too symmetrical for a natural object. Some Internet sites have speculated that this might be either an alien spaceship, a base used by aliens from which to study Earth, or that it could even be a top secret moonbase created by humans.
The unusual object -- photographed by NASA's Clementine spacecraft, launched in 1994 -- measures approximately 500 feet x 420 feet, and is located near the region known as Mare Moscoviense. Using the actual Google Moon coordinates of the object -- 22º42'38.46"N and 142º34'44.52"E -- Huffington Post checked it out for ourselves. Once we arrived at the exact location, we decided to spread out and see if there were any other similar objects nearby.
Here's what we found:

In the image above, at the far left is the original object that can be seen in the Mare Moscoviense region on the far side of the moon. It's the same object shown in the composite image at the top of this story.
The other objects here were found by HuffPost while maneuvering around the moon's surface with the Google Moon viewer. While not as perfectly symmetrical as the original object's seven lights, these others are, nonetheless, as intriguing to look at.
So, what exactly are we seeing here?
"I would suspect, from looking at it that [the original] object is a stitching artifact from Google Moon," said Marc Dantonio, chief photo and video analyst for the Mutual UFO Network.
"A stitching artifact is a photographic anomaly that occurs due to the process by which many photos are aligned and put together to make a large photo mosaic. Google Moon, Google Earth, Google Mars, as well as Google Sky, for that matter, are all composed of tens of thousands of images that are aligned as best as possible with each other and draped over a spherical 'planet,' be it Earth or the moon, for instance," Dantonio told HuffPost via email.
Dantonio owns a special effects company that often creates imagery and models for the U.S. military forces. He explained how the Google Moon software "must make choices as to how it will deal with different lighting, angle and exposure. Further, sometimes the imagery are taken with entirely different spacecraft, and the images have to be scaled or mathematically projected to match the imagery not easily attainable from other sources."
He concludes that artifacts often result when the software can't perfectly match the image.

HuffPost also reached out to former FBI Special Agent Ben Hansen, the lead investigator of the Syfy Channel's popular "Fact or Faked: Paranormal Files."
"The photos are very intriguing," Hansen told HuffPost in an email. "When you really get into the moonbase conspiracy, you learn that much of it is actually based on historical fact. The U.S. has had legitimate plans to build a military base on the moon as far back as 1959, when it proposed a venture they dubbed 'Project Horizon.'
"Many photos, allegedly coming from backyard astronomers or leaked NASA photos, have turned up suspicious-looking images depicting buildings and spacecraft on the moon. The biggest problem we face -- as is the case with these current photos -- is authenticating the images as raw and unaltered. Google Earth obtains their lunar imagery through public domain sources. They don't have their own satellites flying around the backside of the moon to take pictures.
"Is it possible someone might add data to an image depicting buildings and UFOs as a joke? If the raw images from NASA contain the same anomalies, we may be on to something," said Hansen.
Let's give the final word on all this speculation to the Brookings Institution, one of the most highly respected think tanks in Washington, D.C. In 1960, Brookings prepared a report for NASA, titled "Proposed Studies on the Implications of Peaceful Space Activities for Human Affairs."
Page 30 of the report discusses the implications of the potential discovery of extraterrestrial life:
Though intelligent or semi-intelligent life conceivably exists elsewhere in our solar system, if intelligent extraterrestrial life is discovered in the next 20 years, it will very probably be by radio telescope from other solar systems. Evidence of its existence might also be found in artifacts left on the moon or other planets.
The consequences for attitudes and values are unpredictable, but would vary profoundly in different cultures and between groups within complex societies; a crucial factor would be the nature of the communication between us and the other beings. Whether or not Earth would be inspired to an all-out space effort by such a discovery is moot: societies sure of their own place in the universe have disintegrated when confronted by a superior society, and others have survived, even though changed.

'Silver Screen Saucers' book due Sept. 2014

Silver Screen Saucers: Sorting Fact from Fantasy in Hollywood's UFO Movies has been scheduled for publication in September 2014 by White Crow Books.

Details:

More so than any other medium, cinema has shaped our expectations of potential alien life and visitation. From The Day the Earth Stood Still and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, to Battleship, Prometheus and beyond, our hopes and fears of alien contact have been fuelled by the silver screen. But what messages does Hollywood impart to us about our possible otherworldly neighbours, from where do UFO movies draw their inspiration, and what other factors – cultural or conspiratorial – might influence their production and content? Silver Screen Saucers is a timely and revealing examination of the interplay between Hollywood’s UFO movies and the UFO phenomenon itself, from 1950 to present day.

The book grants the reader a rare, close-up examination of the DNA that builds our perceptions of the UFO mystery: one strand of this DNA weaves real events, stories and people from the historical record of UFOlogy, while the other spins and twists with the film and TV products they have inspired. With our alien dreams and nightmares now more fully visualized onscreen than ever before, Silver Screen Saucers asks the question: what does it all mean? Are all UFO stories just fever dreams from LA screenwriters, or are they based in something else? Could any of them be real and are they part of a bigger message?

From interviews with screenwriters and directors whose visions have been shaped by their lifelong UFO obsessions; to Presidents Carter and Reagan talking aliens with Spielberg at the White House; to CIA and Pentagon manipulation of UFO-themed productions; to movie stars and producers being stalked by real Men in Black, Silver Screen Saucers provides fresh perspective on the frequently debated but little understood subject of UFOs & Hollywood.
The book addresses questions such as:

Does Hollywood fuel the UFO mythos, or vice versa? In other words, are our beliefs about alien visitation shaped by UFO movies, or are UFO movies shaped by our beliefs about alien visitation?

Do Hollywood’s UFO movies fictionalize the UFO phenomenon in the public mind, actualize it, or both?

If and when humanity makes full and open contact with an unearthly intelligence, would we, as cinemagoers, be able to divorce Hollywood’s historical imaginings from the reality with which we are presented? Indeed...

Should we? After all, a great deal of Hollywood’s UFO movie content has been closely informed by supposedly factual UFOlogical literature, events and debates. Perhaps, then, there is more truth to be found in Hollywood’s UFO movies than we might imagine – which raises the question:

Just how has so much dense UFOlogical theory (by its very nature ‘fringe’ and subcultural) managed find its way into Hollywood’s populist science fiction narratives? Is Hollywood’s incorporation of UFO lore attributable to a “Hollywood UFO conspiracy” designed to acclimate us to a UFO/alien reality, or is it merely the result of a natural cultural process?
Silver Screen Saucersis bursting with ideas and information that will excite and intrigue any reader with a passing or serious interest in UFOs and/or science-fiction cinema.

The Gipper’s UFO

By Micah Hanks

There have been a lot of UFO stories associated with U.S. Presidents over the years… well, not that many, but the ones that do surface every few decades are usually of good substance (with the exception maybe of Ike Eisenhower’s alleged romps with extraterrestrials, said to have been covered up and explained instead as a visit to the dentistry offices of Dr. Francis Purcell).
Jimmy Carter’s story was pretty good, which involved a sighting of an unusual object he and a group of men claimed to see while attending a Lions Club meeting shortly before his tenure as governor of Georgia. However, aside from observing a light that changed colors and appeared to move closer as he and his company observed it, little else could be said of the strange light, which he wouldn’t officially report until during his term as governor.
Gerald Ford also talked about UFOs, though mostly on behalf of his constituents. JFK had made a vague reference to “unknowns” in a memorandum written to James Webb, regarding the proposition of a joint-U.S.-Soviet space operation. But perhaps no one would have quite so extraordinary a connection with UFOs, and also go on to serve the office of POTUS, as actor-turned President Ronald Reagan, “The Gipper”, whose encounter still stands out among reports of exotic aerial phenomenon. The details of Reagan’s UFO encounter were apparently unintentionally released to a reporter with The Wall Street Journal shortly after the sighting took place, when Reagan described for Norman Miller a “white light” he and his company aboard then-governor Reagan’s private Cessna had seen. However, what is arguably the best description of the encounter was afforded by the pilot at the time, Bill Paynter, who described it thusly:
We were flying a Cessna Citation. It was maybe nine or ten o’clock at night. We were near Bakersfield when Governor Reagan and the others called my attention to a big light flying a bit behind the plane. It appeared to be several hundred yards away. It was a fairly steady light until it began to accelerate then it appeared to elongate.

I’ll interrupt here, briefly, with commentary in noting the odd nature of this description. “A fairly steady light” that remained so, but then “appeared to elongate” as the craft accelerated. But what follows is, arguably, the most revelatory element to the entire encounter:
The light took off. It went up at a 45-degree angle at a high rate of speed. Everyone on the plane was surprised, Governor Reagan expressed amazement. I told the others I didn’t know what it was. The UFO went from a normal cruise speed to a fantastic speed instantly. If you give an airplane power it will accelerate but not like a hot rod and that is what this thing was like. We didn’t file a report on the object because for a long time they considered you a nut if you saw a UFO.
For reasons that should be obvious already, this remains one of the most–if not the most–important observation of a UFO by a U.S. politician. While the object remained ambiguous, its behavior was both consistent with conventional aircraft (i.e. its behavior while cruising, which, depending on the time of day, might have only resembled a small plane flying behind them with approaching headlights), as well as highly unusual; even exotic once we hear of the craft’s peculiar “elongation” and take-off like a hot rod. And of course, that the entire incident transpired in 1974 makes it all the more confusing; what kind of aircraft in 1974–known or unknown–could have employed such seemingly advanced manoeuvrability?
In fact, given the scope of known technology existent today, there are no modern aircraft that would be able to easily fit the criteria for what Reagan, his pilot Mr. Paynter, and the security guards aboard his plane managed to see on that occasion in 1974. Considering that Reagan also went on to serve as U.S. Commander in Chief, his encounter may even stand out among the more important UFO encounters of the last century.
