Festive Chinese lanterns warning is issued
a Chinese lanterna Chinese lantern
THINK twice before setting off Chinese flying lanterns at Christmas and New Year, urges Lancashire County Council.
It is writing to schools and other partners to raise awareness of the problems they can cause to livestock, emergency services and aviation.
County Coun. Michael Green said: “There is growing concern about the impact flying lanterns can have on private property and the environment.
“Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service has attended four fires which it is suspected may have been caused by these lanterns, and organisations including the National Farmers’ Union and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency have launched their own public awareness campaigns.
“I know many people enjoy releasing these lanterns and the county council has no intention to try to enforce a ban – which wouldn’t be reasonable or workable – but I’d like people to be aware of the potential consequences of what seems on the face of it to be such an innocent act.”
The county council’s chief executive Phil Halsall wrote to James Paice MP, the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food, in October, after a meeting of the full council backed a motion calling for the Government to review their sale.
The lanterns, made of paper, wire and a block of solid fuel like a barbecue lighter, are widely sold for as little as £1 each and can travel for miles before falling back to earth.
Often found at family celebrations and music festivals, it is estimated their growing popularity now sees 200,000 released in the UK every year.
The NFU started a campaign when farmers began reporting incidents of cattle suffering illnesses or a painful death after swallowing sharp pieces of wire from lanterns which had been incorporated into bales of hay.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has also raised concerns as a result of people mistaking lanterns for distress flares or even reporting them as UFOs. Calls to the agency caused by flying lanterns are now in the hundreds every year.
And flying lanterns could be a distraction to pilots and a physical danger to low-flying aircraft according to the Civil Aviation Authority, which has called for nearby airfields to be informed before people set them off.

World's First Spherical Flying Machine

The world’s first spherical flying machine was developed and presented by Japan’s Ministry of Defense. It can fly in all directions, hover like a helicopter and even roll over onto the ground.
The machine weighs 350 grams and is made of off-the-shelf parts. It costs $1,400. Its creators say it was made for rescue and reconnaissance, but it could probably be put to other practical uses as well – from military applications to research.
The aircraft is remotely controlled with a kind of joystick, much like toy airplanes. Its versatility and movement flexibility are, however, remarkable.
“As it can take off and land anywhere, it’s hoped that this machine will be able to reach places that were hard to access by air before,” the narrator of the video says.
The creators of the flying machine
say it can stay in the air for eight minutes continuously and its speed can go from zero, when it hovers, to 60 km/hour.
You can watch here a video clip posted on YouTube by Tokyo video news website DigInfo TV from the presentation of the new invention.

Mack Maloney is a military fiction author who has recently made his first foray into non-fiction with his new book UFOs in Wartime. Maloney makes the case the UFOs are most often documented during wartime. He supports his case by covering 70 separate UFO incidents seen over the battle field, ranging from ancient times to modern day military incursions. These sightings are made by high ranking officials, soldiers, and news reporters. Maloney tries to answer the question as to why these visitors are interested in our wars. We will talk to Maloney about these incredible stories, his views on what the military knows, and is hiding, who these visitors are, and what they want.

In the last few months, the news surrounding Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus' has slowly trickled out. Despite several photos, and even a few quotes from the director himself, there aren't many details regarding the actual plot of the film (Scott says that the central metaphor of 'Prometheus' is about a "higher being" who challenges the gods). Unfortunately, this first poster won't be clearing up that story problem. Still, at least it's cool looking!
Released by Twentieth Century Fox on Wednesday, the image features a woman -- or possibly a man, it's hard to tell -- walking toward a giant statue of ... well, that's hard to tell, too. Is that the "higher being" Ridley Scott has spoken of? Actually, if you look closely, it sort of resembles Darth Vader's helmet. It also has similarities to the original 'Alien' poster ('Prometheus' is supposed to exist in the same universe as 'Alien').

Either way, 'Prometheus,' which stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender Guy Pearce and Idris Elba, will hit theaters on June 8, 2012, so perhaps audiences will have to wait to find out until then.

It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a…UFO?

Cowley County, Kansas - Residents are still talking about a mystery craft, seen being towed down US 77 on Monday.
Sitting inside Lindly's Appliance Store, Kammi Root is used to seeing large machinery towed down US 77. But what she saw Monday afternoon is something she won't soon forget.
“There was this funny sphere that went through on this big trailer and my first thought was, 'That looks like a UFO,’” said Root.
A huge 32 foot craft, wrapped in tarp, was as mysterious as the transport company who called Sheriff Don Read for help.
“They told us that it was an aircraft and that they had explored other ways to transport it but this was the best way for them to do it and they asked us not to say a whole lot about it,” said Read.
After all, the massive load's shape would certainly draw enough attention on its own.
“People were calling in saying, 'Oh they think they found a flying saucer. It looks like a flying saucer to us and we don't know for sure what it is,’” said Donetta Godsey with the Winfield Daily Courier.
For nearly an hour, officers helped maneuver the craft through Cowley County.
”The biggest thing that we had to deal with was down at the roundabout we had to remove a bunch of signs and markers because the load was so long it couldn't make the corner,” said Read.
Meanwhile, onlookers struggled to wipe the shock from their faces and the questions from their minds.
”What was that funny thing that was on that trailer that looked like something from somewhere else?” said Root.
So what in the world was it? Undersheriff Bill Mueller says it was an experimental aircraft from Northrop Grumman, possibly a new unmanned drone. It still has a ways to go. Its final destination is Maryland.

Unusual Aircraft Sightings In Kansas Monday

There were lots of UFO sightings in Kansas today. It turns out, it's a very expensive piece of military equipment headed to Pax River, Maryland.

There were lots of UFO sightings in Kansas today. It turns out, it's a very expensive piece of military equipment headed to Pax River, Maryland. Eventually, the plane will be boarded onto an aircraft carrier for flight testing.
It was the talk of the town in Winfield and Augusta Monday, as the very unusual looking aircraft made its way across the country.
"It pretty much took up all four lanes," explained Kevin McClung, who owns KPM Computers on Main Street in Winfield. "What I heard, it was about 32 feet wide."
What 'it' is - is an unmanned drone aircraft built by Northrop Grumman in Palmdale, California. Here is what the finished product looks like.
A Northrop Grumman spokesperson tells us that the aircraft, in fact, is not a UFO. It's a plane that will eventually be able to provide surveillance of military targets and possibly even unmanned air strikes.
"This is really the first time a tail-less, unmanned airplane will be taking off and landing from an aircraft carrier," said Spokesperson Cyndi Wegerbauer. "This is a strike size, low-observable airplane. It's pretty unusual, pretty powerful. It will change naval aviation."
For those who saw it passing through Winfield and Augusta Monday, it caught them by surprise. McClung began snapping pictures as fast as he could.
"I stood right here and just snapped pictures. There was no time to do anything else. We just waved at the UFO driving by," he joked.
"It really did look like a UFO," said Ashley McCoskey. "It was circular and oblong like an actual UFO. It was standing on a trailer and just being pulled by a semi. It was all covered by a tarp, though."
"You can attribute it to some of its sisters like the B-2," Wegerbauer said. "It has a similar shape. That kite shape where it's without the tail. It's good for flying in difficult and turbulent air, especially out at sea."
The X47-B's final destination will be Pax River, Maryland, but we don't know exactly which aircraft carrier it'll be going to.

White House Ends Silence on UFOs and ETs with Rejection of PRG Disclosure Petition l - But Petition ll is Filed Seeking Examination of the Rockefeller Initiative

The White House has inaugurated the "We the People" petition process whereby citizens can submit petitions to the government. ZlandCommunications has obtained details that Stephen G. Bassett, Executive Director of The Paradigm Research Group in Washington DC submitted a petition calling upon the government to formally acknowledge an extraterrestrial presence, but it was rejected on the basis of a lack of evidence. However letters obtained under the Freedom of Information Act tell a very different story about how White House officials discussed UFOs and Extraterrestrial Intelligence secrecy as far back as 1993.

The FBI Memo and Roswell

Over the decades, a few documents relating to the Roswell UFO crash (or the Roswell events if you wish to remove UFO from the discussion) have been found. One of those developed after Army Brigadier General George F. Schulgen asked for FBI help “...in locating and questioning individuals who first sighted the so-called flying discs...”
On July 10, 1947, an FBI memo was created by D. M. Ladd for E. G. Fitch, outlining the Army request. That request was forward to Clyde Tolson, the number two man in the FBI at the time. Tolson endorsed the memo, writing on July 15, “I think we should do this.”
Hoover then endorsed the endorsement (seen here). He wrote, “I would do this but before agreeing to it we must insist upon full access to discs recovered. For instance, in the La. case the Army grabbed it and would not let us have it for cursory examination.”

But Hoover’s handwriting was sloppy and the crucial point, the location, as “in the La case” has been disputed for years. It seems that it can also be read as Sw or Sov or 2a. Of course, if it said, “Sw” then that could refer to the Roswell case.
Tom Carey and I have been discussing this through email for a couple of weeks. I am of the opinion that Hoover wrote “La” and this refers to a case from Shreveport, Louisiana. It is clear that the Shreveport report is a hoax, given that the disc was recovered and examined.
According to information from the Project Blue Book files, the Headquarters, Air Training Command, the office of the AC of S, A-2 [Assistant Chief of Staff, Air Intelligence] Barksdale Field, LA, had received a report that a “Flying Disc [had been] found in Shreveport, Louisiana [on] 7 July 1947.”
In the course of their investigation, they found that the disc was small (seen here), there was an electronic starter attached to it that came from a fluorescent light and two condensers from electric fans. The man who built it, and whose name had been removed from the file, also said that he had used a torch to put soot on the edges so that it looked as if the disc had been spinning.

In other words, the evidence of a hoax is well established.

But there is more.
According to the documentation available, the FBI was alerted to the Shreveport case and FBI agents did interview one of the sources. The FBI memo on the case also said that the Army had taken the disc into their possession.
This case seems to fit facts and it is an “La.”
There is another piece to this. On July 24, 1947, there is another FBI memo. This one mentions the Hoover note but now it is typewritten. It says the same thing but the term has been identified. The crucial sentence says, “For instance, in the La. case the Army grabbed it and would not let us have it for cursory examination.”
That seems to end the discussion, but Tom isn’t as sure as I am. He believes that J. G. Fitch, who provided the typewritten version, in his memo might have suffered from the same problems as the rest of us, meaning that he wasn’t sure what Hoover meant and that question remains open. Tom wants to pursue this a little further to see if he can find a concrete answer.
Tom plans to chase this using a couple of resources he has developed over the last few years. He thinks it is important enough to invest a little additional and effort in finding a solid, final conclusion. And that, really, is the purpose of the Team. To find final, solid answers to the questions that remain about the Roswell case.

Abduct cows and destroy puny human tanks with your UFO's enormous swinging claw in FGOL's iOS actioneer Grabatron

Do you like arcade destruction games like Death Worm and Super Mega Worm?

How about we throw in UFOs and rope physics too?

That's the world of Future Games of London's latest project Grabatron, which has just been released in separate iPhone and iPad versions.

It came from above

It's a typical arcade experience that has you tilting your iOS device to move your UFO left and right over the 2D landscape, then tapping when the UFO is overhead to pick up objects such as cows, trucks, tanks, scientists, oil tankers etc with your enormous retractable claw.

Then you can swing them around, swiping to let go and throw them into buildings, down chimneys, causing explosions and the like.

Mission critical

There's also a level structure that gives you certain tasks - collect 10 cows, destroy 5 armoured vehicles - but the fun is really about tossing things around and making them go bang. You can even roll huge boulders down hills, crushing everything in its path.

Adding some difficulty are nasty soldiers, tanks, helicopters etc who will shoot at you, while replayability is provided with secret levels to explore and 30 power ups to collect.

You can also use in-app purchases to directly buy items such as nukes, ship upgrades and the harder Insane mode.

Grabatron is out now, for iPhone price 99c, €0.79 or 69p or $2.99, €2.39 or £1.99 for the iPad version.

Check out the video to see how it plays.
